At Viable Placemaking, we recently helped a homeowner secure planning permission to extend their residential outbuilding in the South Downs National Park.
Building in a National Park comes with strict rules to protect the area’s unique landscape and character. To give this project the best chance of success, we:
Focused on the appearance of established buildings and the overall and built form, ensuring the extension matched the area’s rural character.
Worked closely with the architect to choose appropriate materials and scale.
Prepared a clear Design and Access Statement showing how the design respected its setting.
We also prepared an Ecosystems Services Statement to demonstrate the scheme's enhancements of biodiversity and ensure the development also contributed towards the natural environment.
This careful approach meant the application was approved without delay, allowing the homeowner to enhance their property while keeping the character of the South Downs at the heart of the design.
